Bio
Born in Northern Ireland in 1964, Paul studied at Ulster University, Belfast. Donaghy's subjects, and variations on themes are classical in nature and refer to masters such as Cezanne, Morandi, De Staël and Matisse while acknowledging the work of William Scott and The Scottish Colourists. Working mostly with a palette knife, his paintings are characterised by vigorous slashes of colour with highlights of heavy impasto on areas where the pigment is otherwise barely staining the canvas. Paul’s roots as a designer are still very visible in the strong shapes, lines and bold colour that embody his floral still lifes. Paul has exhibited widely in solo and group shows throughout the UK and Ireland. Examples of his work can be seen in public and private collections worldwide.
